Much of my imagery is drawn from my passion for the natural world. I grew up among artists in Santa Fe, so my first instinct as a painter was toward landscapes and vivid colors.

The freshness and immediacy of works done on location appeal to me. Painting outside has taught me to capture essential details quickly, although it still can take months to complete a painting. The first impressions laid down in paint start a process of layering that goes on and on.

Although my paintings often begin with a distinct idea, something totally unexpected usually emerges in the end. I stop when somehow it is right. If it is never right, I paint the canvas over with turpentine and rub it down with sandpaper. Then the layering process begins anew. The ghost of the previous painting provides the foundation for the image to come.

Often paintings begin outside, with a long and meditative day spent getting impressions and doing sketches. While I have been drawing for so long that it is nearly an unconscious act to sketch, I still feel it is important to sit with an idea or feeling for a while before capturing it on paper. In this way I focus more on the moment and sensation than on the final product.
