ARTIST’S STATEMENT

My realistic landscapes are inspired by my native California hills or by compositions I photograph while traveling.  I am especially intrigued by patterns created with sunlight and shadow, whether it be a cool oak against a warm hill or a sunlit hut in the rain forest.  I have recently been attracted to paths streaked with shadows. I call these path paintings “Paths of Life” because all of us have to walk our own paths, through the shadows and around the bends to the light in the distance. The more interesting compositions seem to be the ones with more twists and turns.

I love color and I find it in abundance at Farmers’ Markets.  I paint it all – the buyers and the sellers and the beautiful produce as it lay in the sunlight. I choose oil paint as my medium because of its vibrant color, fluidity, and luminosity.

My art training began 41 years ago, with twelve years of classes taught by Robert Rishell in San Leandro.  I spent an interesting summer studying Art at the University of Guadalajara under the teacher of the muralist, Orozco.  After teaching for the Adult School and Middle School Art at St. Leander, I have retired to be able to paint full time.  I was chosen to be one of  Yosemite’s Resident Artists in 2002 and will continue to participate in the program.
